For the youth in Africa, finding solid employment is by far one of the biggest challenges they face. They often lack the opportunities to build a career and a better life that we often take for granted here in the US. Our sincere belief is if they are given the chance to train and work in software development, it would open up a world of opportunities and bring real hope and change for countless across the continent.

Even for those lucky enough to pursue computer science training, the road is difficult. Among the many hurdles they face with the global pandemic, African computer science students have suffered the loss of local internship and practical training opportunities due to lockdown restrictions and the lack of remote work options. We felt this was one challenge we were perfectly suited to address.

Working with our partners, Botho University and the Botswana government investment and trade agency, BITC, we have adapted our program to meet this need. It’s called the ACA Engineering Residency Program, and it offers hands-on training for software engineering in a real-world startup company setting. We genuinely believe we have an opportunity to alter the trajectory of these young peoples’ lives for the better with this program!

Our plan is to run two remote cohorts for the fall semester (spring in southern Africa) this year for Botho CS students at both the Gaborone, Botswana and Maseru, Lesotho campuses. We are raising funds for salaries of the handful of local instructors and teaching assistants based in Gaborone, Botswana.

Our goal is to have these positions fully supported by June 15, so if you are at all interested in contributing, it would be greatly appreciated if you could do so before the end of April!
